KAYA vs Imported Trailers
One is built around the corner and backed down the road. The other is bought abroad and landed through Mombasa. Both can get you camping — the experience of owning them is where they part ways.
CHAPTER 01Getting Ready
Adventure starts before you leave home.
With a KAYA trailer, your camp lives in the trailer between trips. The kitchen stays stocked, the bed stays made, the gear stays in its place. Hitch up, check the lights, and you're already packed.
An imported trailer can offer much of the same camping functionality — once it's here. Purchasing abroad, shipping, clearing and registering each add steps before the first night out. Locally held stock shortens that, when it's available.
Both ask something of your driveway. A trailer needs a suitable tow vehicle and somewhere to park it. That's the same trade-off either way.
KAYA AT-1
Advantages
Kitchen and bed already built in
Gear stays organised between trips
Considerations
Needs a suitable tow vehicle
Needs separate parking space
Imported trailer
Advantages
Similar camping functionality once landed
Locally held stock can shorten the wait
Considerations
Shipping, clearing and registering add steps
Buying abroad means buying blind to an extent
CHAPTER 02Arriving at Camp
You've arrived. Now enjoy it.
The AT-1 has an enclosed, ready-made bed — no tent to pitch, no bedding to lay out. A standard campsite setup takes under five minutes. Add the optional awning and you're shaded in five to ten.
A rooftop-tent setup means folding the tent out, setting up bedding and breaking it all down again in the morning. It's a rhythm many campers love — and a few minutes more each evening and dawn.
We won't claim every imported trailer is slower to set up. Some are quick; some aren't. What's consistent is the AT-1: an enclosed bed that's always ready, every single night.
KAYA AT-1
Advantages
Enclosed bed ready on arrival
Standard setup under five minutes
Considerations
Awning adds a few more minutes
Imported trailer
Advantages
Setup time varies by model
Some import very quick to pitch
Considerations
Roof-tent or fold-out layouts need daily pitching
CHAPTER 03The Freedom to Explore
Your camp stays. Your adventure continues.
Unhitch the trailer and your vehicle is free — light, empty, ready for a game drive, a town run or a track you'd never tow a trailer down. The camp stays exactly as you left it: bed made, kitchen loaded, awning up.
A rooftop-tent setup travels with the vehicle. The bed goes where the car goes, so every drive means folding down camp first.
Imported camping trailers can offer the same detachable-camp freedom. It's a real advantage of any trailer over a vehicle-mounted tent — not a KAYA exclusive.
KAYA AT-1
Advantages
Leave camp fully set up
Vehicle free for game drives
Built-in kitchen stays at camp
Considerations
Tow vehicle must be rated for the loaded weight
Imported trailer
Advantages
Same detachable-camp freedom
Comparable once unhitched
Considerations
Depends on the imported model's layout
CHAPTER 04Ownership
Built here. Supported here.
KAYA is manufactured in Kenya, in our Nairobi workshop. That means a local warranty, mobile service options, spare parts made to order, and a direct line to the people who built your trailer.
Every trailer goes through pre-delivery inspections and testing — road and towing, brakes, suspension, electrical, water — before NTSA inspection and registration.
We won't pretend an import has no support. It does — through its seller. What it doesn't have is a manufacturer workshop down the road. And honestly, a KAYA takes about four months to build, and needs a tow vehicle, storage and maintenance like any trailer.
KAYA AT-1
Advantages
Two-year limited manufacturing warranty
Nairobi workshop and mobile service
Spare parts made to order
Customisable to your spec
Considerations
Around four months to build
Needs storage and a tow vehicle
Imported trailer
Advantages
Seller may offer some support
Stock trailers can deliver sooner
Considerations
No local manufacturer workshop
Parts typically shipped in
Warranty claims often involve freight
